On Thursday I went to the Arahura marae with the rest of the year 5,6,7and 8s and the other teachers. We went there to learn about Maori culture and what it is like to stay on the marae. I was feeling really busy because it was a rush to get there on time. I was excited and a little nervous.

When we got there we had to wait for everyone to arrive. After that the karanga started. Then we went inside for the whaikorero. When I first went inside I thought wow, because the artwork was incredible! The man who spoke for the marae took7000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 hous! It felt like a long time. After that, was the hongi. Then we had morning tea. I had a pie but then I realised it was a bacon and egg pie. I don’t like bacon and egg pies.
After that, we went back into the wharenui and did our mihi. It took forever because there was so many people! When I shared my mihi I felt nervous. I was so nervous that I was frozen to the spot! But people said I did really well. Then we had lunch and we went to the beach to find pounamu and do a beach clean up. We also did a sculpture building competition. I came 2nd equal. I was in a group with Daniel and Callan. We built Poutini who is a taniwha. We used wood and shells and a rubber glove to build him. We also built Waitaiki’s grave. Callan pretended to be Tamaahua. When the judges came over I explained our sculpture to them. It was very interesting building the sculpture.
Later on, we went back to the marae and had dinner and dessert. Then the evening activities started. I did soap carving and tukutuku panels. I really enjoyed doing the tukutuku panels but the soap carving was hard. I enjoyed the tukutuku panels because it was nice and relaxing. Then we set up the mattresses the we had s'mores. The s’mores took a long time to cook. While we were waiting we sang waiata. I enjoyed singing the waiata.
After that, we got into our pajamas and went into bed.

I would like to go on a marae stay again. I really enjoyed the stay and if I went again I would like to go for longer.

Hi Brighid I only just found this lovely piece of writing. It was the best thing in my whole month getting to go on camp with you. I didn't know the marshmallows with biscuits were called 's'mores', so I've learnt something new from reading your blog post.
