Kowhaiwhai Art

   Rendered Image

In He kakano we have been doing work around Maori art, more specifically kowhaiwhai panels.
So we got to make our own ones using canvases and paint. We decided to use the love heart design
with the koru to symbolise the community and the people in it.
We chose these colours on accident and we decided to go for a dark look.
We experimented with colours and it turned out that we had used colours that we weren’t in our
original plan. It took a while to come up with the finale results but we were happy with the finished result.
The splatter paint was an idea from our friend.

Jake Bailey

Today Jake bealy came to are school and talked to as. Jake Bailey is a survivor
of bichette non hodgkin's lymphoma cancer. He is a very inspirational person he talked about his
struggles with cancer and how he wasn’t expected to live.  He did how once he had to stay in the
hospital room for 52 days straight.

One thing he talked a lot about is happiness and resilience. How you need to be resilient in life be
resilient in life and when you get pushed down just get back up again. He also talked a lot about
happiness and how happiness is a skill that you learn and that you need to practice it to master
and keep it going so that you can stay in a happy state of mind.

Another thing that was so incredible about his journey is how brave he was he hat to go through
a lot of very panfil presiges. The fiar that you are going to die is a  very scary thing that got really close
to Jake in his talk he said about even though everyone said he was brave he was confused because
he felt scared inside. He said that bravery is not a thing you feel it’s a thing that you do and is a thing that
is easy to fake. Real bravery is that evan when you are scared you keep going fired and doing stuff.

The last thing he said was to go away and do what you want in life.
Follow your dreams but not only for yourself do it for everyone with cancer who didn’t get the chance.

throne of glass book review

   Throne of Glass Book Review

Are you a child in your teen/ tween years? Are you someone looking for something to read as in something that’s actually interesting! I have got just the book for you. Seriously this book is amazing! It’s got fantasy, adventure, lots of action and even the slightest bit of romance.
Throne of Glass is a fiction book written by Sara J Mass.  I would recommend this book for children aged 11 to 16 because it has some strong content in it that would be too much for younger children but I think that this age group is old enough to handle it in a mature way.

Most of the story is set in Rifthold which is the capital city of Aradon. Aradon is the largest country  in the continent of Erilea

The main characters in this book are Celaena Sardothien, Chaol Westfall, Dorian Havilliard, Nehemia Ytger, Cain, the king of Aradon, Nox and Kaltien.  Celaena is an eighteen year old assassin who gwas caught and now is a slave in Evander,a salt mine slave camp. Celaena gets the opportunity to go into a competition in which she could finally get her freedom after five years of being the king’s assassin… but only if she wins.

Chaol is captain of the guard in the castle serving for the king. Then the competition comes along and his best friend Dorian chooses to enter Celaena and it becomes his job to look after this snobby teenage brat, or so he thinks.

Dorian is the crown prince of Aradon and best friends with Chaol. When Celaena comes to the castle for the competition Dorian thinks he might of actually found love other than the thousands of girls that have swooned over him in the past.

Nehemia is the princess of Eyllwe. She is a strong leader and will do anything for her country and stopping her people from becoming slaves of the king of Aradon. She goes to  Rifthold to supposedly learn about the Aradon way of life and ends up becoming best friends with Celana.

There isn’t really much to say about the king of Aradon. He’s just some evil king who took over the whole continent, slaughtered heaps of people and somehow managed to get rid of magic.

Cain is the Duke of Perrenton’s entry into the competition. He is from the White Fang Mountains where there is rumoured to still be magic but he is not the nicest person to be around.

Nox is the only person in the competition to be nice to celana throughout it. They help each other to keep going and complete the elimination challenges.

Katlian is one of the ladies in waiting To the Queen.  She is very beautiful and comes with family rumoured to be Richer in the King but she is very snobby and spends most of her time trying to win over Dorian.

I think that this book ralits to me because me and celaena both started fighting training at a young age  and I feel like I can connect to her personality and we are really similar people.

In conclusion I think Throne of Glass is a good book that you should definitely read!
I think you will really enjoy it especially if you like drama, adventure and fantasy books.

Callaghans ridge recount

O n thursday the 11 of april 2019 my class along with room 1 miss Kemp and some parents went and did the callaghans ridge walk. when we got we had to wait for the parent to drop the cars of at the other end of the track. We had already gotten given a scavenger hunt to do during the walk so we started to tick things off by what was around as. During the walk it started to rain hard but we still had to keep going. The bush was beautiful and alout of the thing were on the scavenger hunt like button fern, kidney fern, blue mushrooms and bell birds. After awhile we stopped for lunch but before we could eat we had to build a bavi with just some rope and a tarpaulin. After we had eaton we had to pack up are bavi and make it look like we hadn’t even been their.

Overall I think it was a good walk just very dump and it wasn’t just because of the run I have done other walks in that area and they are all dump so you would want to do it on a dry day. But it is still worth doing the walk. Evan through it is 4 hours long it is quite an easy walk to do.

road crossing safety

Kea Patrol

I strongly agree  that we should use kea patrol at Karoro because
I feel that it helps people cross the road safe and happy.
Kea patrol is a good opportunity for students to help.

One reason the I feel very strongly that we should keep kea patrol at Karoro
school is that it helps people cross the street safely.
This is important because Karoro  school is right next to a state highway
so the traffic is going very fast. Even if we were next to a quieter road there
would still be danger because there would still be cars that could come and
some kids might be silly and just run across the road without looking.
There are a lot of people that cross the road and some of them are very small.
Their parents aren't always there to pick them up so if they try to cross the
road by themselves cars might not be able to see them.

Another reason I think kea patrol is important is that giving students the
opportunity to help out gives them a sense of maturity and makes them feel
important. Kea patrol gives these kids a chance to help out with their school
and develop leadership skills. This experience can help them speak louder
and have more confidence with other things in their life.

I personally feel that road patrol is vitally important because of safety and
responsibility.  We must use kea patrol at Karoro School and other schools
throughout New Zealand.

beach cookout

On Wednesday the 3 of april 2019  room 1 and room 8 along
with the parents and teachers.  We went down to Karoro beach
by the Tasman Sea. We went down to the beach to do a beach
cookout.

We basically went to the beach and built a tipi fire then waited
for it burn to ashes and then start cooking some food.
Our group made sausages and pancakes.
I was very happy with the way that they turned out.
They were very nice and we had extra to give Ms Kemp.

We cooked in groups; in my group was me, Jack, Phoebe, and Clem. The adult with our group was Kelly (clem’s mom).  We did the beach cookout for William Pike Challenge but also it because it is a good life skill that we could used in the future and just to have a break and go down and have some fun.

ride of the supers

Ride Of The Supers

Sleeping, I have been for many years wondering what inhabits this planet. Are the humans still there? I saw them about 2 hundred years ago when I last woke up.

My siblings Flameatou and Ashfer had told me about these creatures.
They had been in their countries for hundreds of years but it was the first time
I had seen them in Aotearoa. They were  deadly hunters, colonising the
world but weak like most creatures.
They were smarter than most animals and getting stronger by the day,
still I decided not to blow.

I have blown before, about 300 thousand years ago.
I was bored, there nothing to do and plus that annoying worm bug keep
waking me up. The eruption took care of him  but that wasn’t the only thing.
It took care of Flameatou and Ashfer all the way from where they were
on the earth. Apparently humans  in Greece had recorded red skies for months.
Still I wasn’t surprised after all I was the taniwha of one of the
super volcanoes;I can destroy half the world.
What would be really dangerous is if Flameatou and Ashfer and me
blew at the same time.

Any way, it was time to go see the world and what had happened
to it in the time that I was sleeping. I opened one eye.
The light rushed, in blinding me but I shook it off and flew up through the
tunnel to ski through the water. Oh, I forgot. A lake had formed on top
of the volcano. And now I’m drenched!

But I’ve got bigger problems than that, I thought, looking over the land.
What happened to the bush? The beautiful forest?
The sound of the bird’s, the majestic moa and the Haast eagle?
That was a funny bird last time I was awake.
I saw it pick up 5 year old children and carry them off.
But now it’s all gone, all of it and in its place... is trouble!
Big metal cubes billowing out smoke, the
ground covered in stone, smaller objects whizzing around
but still leaving trials of smoke and a weird brightly colored material that
people keep dropping on the ground. Whatever it is, it is not good for the
environment.I fly back to the volcano as fast as I can.
I need to call Ashfer and Flameatou.

I get to the volcano and slowly breath
some fire, instantly it roars up into the air.
After a while the dancing flames start forming into my troublesome siblings.
Even though they are just holograms it looked like they were actually there.
“Have you seen the disgrace the humans have turned this beautiful
planet into?” I said hastily.
“They need to go so we need to blow, all three of us and now.”
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” asked Ashfer.
“It’s what we need to do. The humans are destroying the earth and we
need to stop them,”said Flameatou.“Right, it’s settled then.
Let’s do it now, the sooner the better,” I said and then hung up.
I went down to the bottom of the volcano, in and blew.
The lava rumbled getting higher. It sprang out the top and into the air,
the fiery red storm devouring everything in its path.

my self poem

I am from a tree hut
From homemade muesli and sand
I am from the house across the road were everything thing is warm and familiar
I am from the crack willow tree from the dance floor the cabbage tree
I am from the sounds of chookes
And the stormy waves
From my unmade bed
I’m from dads tortellini and his mild currys
I’m from Brighid and thomes
I’m from reading and walking
Dance and chess
I’m “from get up” and “clean your room”
From the pages of throne of glass
And twinkle twinkle little star
I am from chess and chess tournaments
I am from biking around greymouth
I’m from my living room and newzealnd
From pizza and pasta
I’m from my nana pam
How though a water mellan out the car window
I’m from gallagher wine glass.

summer learning journey day 3

task 1
your own mythical beast
Pukurua The Greedy

Did you know I have a Ahwinat? Well I do. Her name is Pukurua. Most people think she is evil but that’s only because she steals everyone's food! Her head is circular and she has an oval body and four legs. She has an oval eye as well as her two small wings on her back. Her food basket is an oval like shape and it sits on the bottom of her back. She has a mud brown head, neck and a back leg. Her other three legs are pink. She has four orange feet, blue eyes and thin peach hair which comes out the top of her head. She also has two wings on her back and the outer part of her wings is kikorangi and the inner part is kōwhai. She has a kākāriki food basket with a pango net. She also has a kākāriki tail with mangu spots and black hair on the end. Her hobbies are stealing food and eating. I love flying on Pukurua’s back. She can go as fast as the wind. When we fly we go up to the sky, under the earth and into the sea. I go everywhere on my Ahwinat. Once we went into outer space and into a black hole it was like a display of colours. It looked incredible. But then we had to go before we got sucked in by gravity. I have an amazing Ahwinat!

task 2
pros and cons of being a doc ranger

Pros:
  • you get to see pretty bush
  • you get to be around cool birds like kiwi
  • you have a job without pollousion
Cons:
  • theres relly ugly uniform
  • you might get lost in the bush
in conlesion i would not like to be a dock ranger

task 3
wwf

the wwf is trying to save the saimaa ringed seal. they are doing this by bilding snow banks for the seals to nest in. i think that it worck effectively because  if there are no snow banks the seals will just nest on the ice  and the pups are to vonrible to preaditers and the cold.

summer learning journey day two

task 1
would you like to visit Tāne Mahuta

Tāne Mahuta is the biggest tree in new Zealand and is located in the northland region in witch is the north island. I think it it would really could to go see it because of it's height and the fact that it is 50 times bigger than me! it would also be quite a cool walk to do it's quite short only 5 minuets one way.

task 2
new Zealand sports teams with the word 'fern' in there title

  • 'black ferns'

Picture from: http://www.allblacks.com/Teams/Ferns
  • silver ferns
Picture from the Silver Ferns website.
  • white ferns
Picture from: https://www.nzc.nz/news-items/archive/new-look-for-white-ferns

I like the silver fern uniform the best because it isn't so tight on you so you have a lot of breathing room and it looks nice and also netball is the best sport!

task three
cuktice math proublem

if a cutice need 3 millilitres of water per day how much would it need in a year
